Organizing Your Move So You Won't Forget Anything

When you're in the final process of moving, it's easy to forget about and leave some things behind. Therefore, it's important to organize your move well in advance so that you'll have everything in place when you get to your new home. Here are some ways to help you remember the most common things that most people forget about on moving day.

Write Everything Down

Don't rely on your memory when it comes to how you plan on organizing your move. As soon as you know you're moving, make a move-out plan in writing. Write about what you plan to do and when you will do them. Keep the plan in a prominent place until your move.

Clear Your Storage Area First

Many people forget about their home's storage rooms, so it's best to start going through yours as soon as possible. Throw or give away things that you know you won't use at your new place. Try to pare down things as much as possible so that you'll have less to move. If possible, rent an outside storage area near your new home and move the entire contents of your current storage there until you move.

Pack Up Items You Don't Need Early On

If there are any things that you are positive you won't need until after you move, pack those up first and put them in an out-of-the-way place. You can also put those into your offsite storage. The less you have to pack up and move near the move-out day, the better.

Notify Important Businesses and Schools

Businesses you rely on, as well as schools, should be notified about your move well in advance. Give utilities and other services notice of your move as well as when you want these services transferred to your new residence. You should also notify the post office so that your mail can be redirected. This is critical as there are some things that can only be mailed; these things could end up in the wrong hands.

Check for Loose Ends

On moving day, be sure to do a sweep of your entire house to check for small appliances that may still be plugged in or items in hidden areas. Make sure you clear out all the perishable food in your refrigerator and pack all the non-perishable food. Plan on going out for coffee that last day so that you won't forget to pack the coffeemaker.

There's probably nothing more frustrating than getting to your new home and finding out that you've either forgotten to pack something or failed to notify someone of the move. However, if you take time to organize things well in advance, then packing up and moving won't be as stressful. About Me

Keeping Your Family Happy On the Road Traveling is hard, especially when you have children. I didn't used to think too much about throwing an overnight bag in the car and taking off, but after we had kids, a lot of things changed. We realized that doing anything new was a challenge, so I began talking with my family about moving cross country. Although it was a lot for my kids to process, they eventually came around to the idea, and it was neat to see the looks on their faces when they realized they could start over in a new place. Find out more about how I moved with my kids on this blog.
