Making Your Moving Budget: What You Should Include

When you are planning a move, it can be easy to get overwhelmed with everything that goes into the moving process. It can be so overwhelming at times that you may forget to set up a budget for your big move. This can cause you a great deal of extra stress as the costs begin to accrue that you did not plan or budget for. To help avoid this unneeded stress, get to know some of the things you should include in your moving budget. Then you can better plan for your big move.

Mover Fees and Possible Extras

One of the main things you will want to include in your moving budget is the cost of the mover fees. Hiring a moving company for your move can help you to save time, effort, and stress come moving day. Talk to a few moving companies as you begin to plan your moving budget. Ask them for estimates based on how much you have to move and how far you are moving everything.

When you put the moving and storage service fees into your budget, err on the side of caution and put the highest estimate in as your budgeted amount. This will help you to avoid charges that exceed your budget at the end of the move.

In addition to the standard moving fees, consider any special service that you may need on top of standard moving assistance. For example, if you have a piano, you will likely need to pay extra for piano moving services. Other especially heavy items or those that need special care, including appliances, can also incur extra moving costs. Ask the moving companies about these costs as well.

Furniture Wrap, Mattress Covers, and More

If you want to move your items safely and to avoid damage to your furniture, you will need supplies to make that happen. Furniture wrap is a form of heavy-duty plastic wrap that you can use on couches, chairs, armoires, and more. This wrap can keep the corners and edges of the furniture padded, preventing wear and damage. It can also keep drawers and other moving pieces of the furniture securely in place during the move.

Mattress covers serve essentially the same purpose but completely cover the mattresses. This is especially important if you want to keep your mattresses clean during the moving process. You will need a cover for each mattress and box spring in your house.

In addition to the costs of getting your bigger items ready to move, you will have other packing material needs. This includes boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, labels, and the like. While many of these items are relatively inexpensive on their own, the costs can and will add up, and it is a good idea to budget for them to prevent any surprises.

With these costs to include in your moving budget in mind, you can better plan for your move and avoid any unwanted surprises.

About Me

Keeping Your Family Happy On the Road Traveling is hard, especially when you have children. I didn't used to think too much about throwing an overnight bag in the car and taking off, but after we had kids, a lot of things changed. We realized that doing anything new was a challenge, so I began talking with my family about moving cross country. Although it was a lot for my kids to process, they eventually came around to the idea, and it was neat to see the looks on their faces when they realized they could start over in a new place. Find out more about how I moved with my kids on this blog.
